When I was approached by a vintage-clad stranger in my hometown a couple of years ago, I only had a vague idea of what swing dancing might be. Due to my love of the s and the effect that had on my wardrobe people had mentioned swing dance to me a couple of times before, but it was only after finding myself near-obsessively watching lindy hop a type of swing dance videos on Youtube that I thought it might be time for me to give it a try. Swing dance encompasses many different dances dating from the s to the s, most of which originated from African-American communities.
The original dancers from this era known as old-timers were athletic, musical, and energetic; dancing to insanely fast music and throwing each other through the air. Although many swing dances are partner dances, there is no need to come with anybody else, as most swing lessons are taught in rotation, meaning you end up dancing with nearly everybody- this was something I dreaded at first but is now one of my favourite aspects of lessons.
The dances we learn in DUSS are social dances, this means there is no learned routine or set partners; when a new song starts to play, you ask someone to dance and then improvise your way through songs, fitting silly and impressive moves to the music.

Looking to get out and party? Come out to Sugar Swing this weekend! We make that happen every Friday and Saturday night, and also every second week at the Rec Room! All of our swing dances feature a drop-in beginner lesson to kick off the night, followed by great music for dancing. We have a passion for documenting and preserving the good times we have together through photography and video. Practicing good personal hygiene is important and is especially appreciated when interacting closely with other people like we often do as dancers. We suggest wearing deodorant, bathing regularly, brushing your teeth, bringing a breath mint or chewing gum to the dance, and perhaps bringing an extra shirt or two to change into. If you use perfume or cologne, consider wearing it sparingly, as some people have sensitivities to certain scents.
And of course, “Absolutely! To reiterate: if you are being asked to dance, you are under no obligation to comply, and rejection should never be taken personally. Better yet, if someone has said “No” once, let them approach you the next time when they’re ready to dance, and if you’re turning down a request but would like to dance later on, letting a person know that can avoid any confusion.

My favorite hobby besides reading is swing dancing. When I started, I had two left feet, someone dropped me yes, dropped , and I was terrible — but I was in love. Whatever way you swing it, you will definitely get your daily steps in, and then some. Dance is a great way to communicate with another human being, even without speaking. You also learn how each lead or follow has a different response to your personal connection method — so you can make adjustments and have many different types of dances with many different people.
I have made many new friends from swing dancing whom I might not have met anywhere else. We have very diverse interests and backgrounds, but we share something in common: a love of swing dancing. I really enjoy catching up with people once a week during a dance, or on the edge of the dance floor as we watch and admire other dancers.
